CHRONIC DISEASE – THE REAL AMERICAN EPIDEMIC
A CALL FOR MINDBODY MEDICINE
Chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and high blood pressure afflict about 200 million Americans and account for 75% of the $2.2 trillion spent on health care in America. Doctors give expensive drugs to “manage” these illnesses, while medical research shows that they are caused by our lifestyle (diet, sedentary living, and smoking) as well as our mind style (chronic stress).
Extensive medical research as well as my 25 years of holistic medical practice has shown me that the best treatment for chronic illness is promoting the natural wisdom of the body using proper diet and nutrients, as well as herbs and medications as needed, along with exercise. And, importantly, helping the patient to uncover the cause of disease in the mind and reduce stress.
Let’s look at some of the evidence, starting with heart disease. Dr. Dean Ornish compared two similar groups of coronary artery disease patients over five years. The first group was treated with a vegetarian diet, exercise training and stress reduction, while the second group received standard cardiology treatment, e.g. statin drugs. The lifestyle group showed reduced coronary blockage by 8%, while the standard medical care group experienced increased coronary blockage by and average of 28%. (The Lifestyle Heart Trial, Lancet, July, 1990). I am sure that the standard care group required more angiograms, coronary stents and bypass operations, as well as reduced quality of life compared to the lifestyle group.
The Lyon Diet Heart Study (Circulation, 1999) compared the typical “Western” diet with the Mediterranean diet in patients after having a heart attack. After four years of follow-up the study showed a 32% reduction in cardiac death and nonfatal heart attack in people on the Mediterranean diet compared to the standard western diet, as well one third as much heart failure, stroke and unstable angina. Also, the Mediterranean diet group had 95 hospital admissions, compared to 180 in the standard diet group.
Cardiologist Dr. Arthur Agatston, wrote the best selling South Beach Diet to help his patients lose weight, improve their cholesterol and avoid diabetes and heart disease. The program is so successful that his patients are no longer having heart attacks. Dr Agatson says "one of the biggest secrets in medicine today is that cardiologists and internists who are practicing aggressive prevention are rarely seeing premature heart attacks and strokes in people under 70."
Most of the large studies showing the benefits of lifestyle medicine do not provide the individually tailored use of nutritional supplements that is available with modern nutritional medicine. The body wisdom is like an orchestra. In addition to cardiovascular function, you need good digestion, immunity, hormone balance and detoxification for the music called “health and wellbeing”.
