KONDROT EYE PROGRAM – RESTORING VISION

INTRODUCTION

Dr. Edward Kondrot is an ophthalmologist who realized that restoring healthy function in the body generally would necessarily improve vision.

Integrative, or functional medicine, provides the tools to evaluate and restore health to the many systems that comprise the wondrous biological symphony of your body. Digestion, assimilation, immunity, cardiac function, sex hormones, thyroid, adrenal, detoxification, neurotransmitters and much more all work together: you cannot isolate one from the other.

Dr. Ronald Peters, the Medical Director at MindBody medicine Center, has 40 years of experience in integrative medicine and guides patients to use the tools of functional medicine to reverse many common diseases such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease, a range of digestive disorders, anxiety, depression, arthritis, and more.  Your Ophthalmologist understands the science eye care, while integrative medicine improves vision based on the perennial truth, “the best treatment for disease is the promotion of health.”

EYE DISEASE AND FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE

Macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataracts are chronic diseases, just like diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, high blood pressure, Alzheimer’s disease and many others.  Over 60% of Americans have one or more chronic diseases, which arise gradually over many years due to poor diet, lack of exercise and recurrent stress.

The progression and severity of macular degeneration, as with all age-related diseases, are exacerbated by:

  • oxidative stress,
  • inflammation,
  • high blood sugar, and
  • poor vascular health.

The macula is red in color because it has many tiny blood vessels providing oxygen and nutrients to the light sensitive cells of the retina.  Blockages in this microcirculation contain cholesterol and are like the blockages elsewhere in the body including the heart and the brain.

Glaucoma arises from a blockage to the flow of aqueous humor between the chambers of the eye.   The risk factors for glaucoma, like macular degeneration, are similar to the risk factors for atherosclerosis elsewhere in the body.  Disturbances in mitochondrial production of energy, or ATP, is important in glaucoma as it is for other chronic diseases.

Age related cataract formation is also based on silent patterns of oxidative stress and, high blood sugar disturbing and clouding proteins in the lens of the eye.

And, all the above is increased by nutrient deficiencies and the gradual accumulation of chemical toxins and heavy metals, such as lead, mercury and aluminum, that is so common in modern society.  These toxins are one major source of the oxidative stress on the eye.

In summary, the  treatment is based on the following:

  • Identify and treat risk factors such as C-reactive protein, high cholesterol, homocysteine and more
  • Proper diet to reduce inflammation and restore deficiencies
  • Antioxidant therapy to reduce oxidative stress
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Correct nutrient deficiencies using diet, supplements and IV therapy
  • Detoxify the body from chemical and heavy metal toxins.
  • Reduce blood viscosity
  • Restoring nitric oxide function
  • Enhance blood perfusion throughout the body.
  • Improve mitochondrial energy production.

NUTRIENT THERAPY

Basic nutrients for all participants, with additional nutrients as needed:

Macular specific nutrients

Glaucoma specific nutrients

Cataract specific therapy

SUMMARY OF THE PROGRAM

Step One: Evaluation and diagnostics

  • Comprehensive Medical History and Physical Examination:
  • Laboratory testing
  • Vision testing
    • ETDRS assessment of vision acuity – Much different than the standard Snellen or big “E” eye chart.
    • Light house contrast sensitivity – How many of you have trouble reading lightly printed letters? This test measures your ability to see letters of lighter and lighter contrast. This is related to toxicity and heavy metal poisoning.
    • Color Campimetry Testing – How many of you had visual fields in a fish bowl with a flashing white light? We do visual fields using movement with 4 separate colors – red, green, blue and white.

Step 2: Treatment

  • Rehydration Protocol
  • Nutrient Deficiency treatment.
  • Blood flow circulation therapy
  • Frequency Specific Microcurrent Therapy Microcurrent is a well-established therapy that improves blood flow, stimulates cellular activity, reduces scar tissue and inflammation, and helps to balance the autonomic nervous system. Your 5-day program will begin with treatments that balance your autonomic nervous system, balances neuroendocrine functions and treatments to reduce stress. We will program a detoxification program to help to reduce toxins in your body which are contributing to your disease. Emphasis will be placed on developing and fine tuning a customized program for your eye problem. This program will be fine-tuned over the 5 days. Each day you will have 2 eye programs, a stress reduction program and a detoxification program.
  • Syntonic Light therapy – Syntonics or optometric phototherapy, is the branch of ocular science dealing with the application of selected light frequencies through the eyes. It has been used clinically for over 70 years in the field of optometry with continued success in the treatment of visual dysfunctions, including strabismus (eye turns), amblyopia (lazy eye), focusing and convergence problems, learning disorders, and the aftereffects of stress and trauma. In recent years, Syntonics has been shown to be effective in the treatment of brain injuries and emotional disorders. A specific wavelength of light will be selected to help detoxify your eye, stimulate retinal function and balance the autonomic nervous system. Each day you will receive 2 light therapy treatments
  • Nutritional counseling
  • Intravenous Nutrient Therapy-
  • Ozone and Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation therapy

Step 3: Final evaluation after treatment program

ETDRS assessment of vision acuity, Light house contrast sensitivity and Color Campimetry Testing are repeated the results are compared to the pretreatment measurements. Each patient will then have a private consultation with Dr. Peters to review the results and outline their treatment program to continue improving their vision

RESULTS OF THE VISION PROGRAM

Dr Kondrot published the results of his 3-day intensive program on 152 patients with macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataract and other degenerative eye diseases.  Eighty-five percent showed vision improvement as measured by visual acuity, contrast and visual field testing (1) At MindBody Medicine Center, we have had 100% of patients showing some degree of vison improvement after intensive therapy, although sometimes the improvement is small.  Our program offers an intensified application of integrative medical therapeutics for improving blood circulation and reducing oxidative damage and inflammation occurring in the body and affecting eye function.
